My wife and I, as budget travelers on a latest journey to Guangzhou China, were rather taken aback upon our arrival at the train station in the metropolis.
An absence of hotels of any kind around the huge central station had us reaching for the tourist information and guide book.
For at first we thought that because this is one of the largest cities in the country we by and large didn’t need to make reservations ahead of time when we are backpacking around.

We decided to settle on the Guangdong Shamian Hotel, a reasonably inexpensive hotel that had a couple of rough edges but had an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff; even though at first we looked at a few cheap hotels in a number of the neighborhoods.
Right on the Pearl River, the Shamian Island waterfront comes alive at night in the midst of outdoor restaurants, and you can sit and get pleasure from an impressive view of the city as you watch the boat traffic on the river.
Compared to other parts of Guangzhou, prices here are a bit higher, but, on the other hand, we very much enjoyed our seafood dinner which is why I can say it was a worthy splurge.
The quantity of Western people one sees walking around pushing strollers carrying little babies (who are certainly without a doubt Chinese) is one of those interesting things about Shamian island.
Incidentally, Guangzhou turns out to be a center for Americans who would like to adopt orphaned Chinese babies, and it simply supports the fact that at the White Swan Hotel right nearby is where the American consulate is to be found on this island where most people stay.
We were certainly able to find excellent, cheap Guangzhou hotel options on the quiet island, right in the middle of one of China’s largest cities although the hotels there can’t really be put in the budget category. Shamian Island is, however, a very good quality base from which to travel around Guangzhou, China.
